Summer Marsh

I was invited into a show later this year in Richmond WA titled New Horizons. The intent of the show is to show images of the work the artist is known for, but allow them to explore something quite different that interests them. My other passion in life right now is birding and bird photography, so it seemed a perfect avenue to explore. This is a relief carving of Virginia Rails. These are pretty elusive birds that live in reedy marshes and are not easy to see. I found and photographed a couple families of these birds when I was a newbie birder and it really made my day. I decided to try to depict these birds in a relief carving. It took quite a bit of time in carving, detailing and painting the scene. I was pleased with the results and now think this may be another direction for me to explore.
