Masters of Craft: Philadelphia's American Craft Council Fellows
"Masters of Craft" is a collaborative presentation of exhibitions, installations, and educational programs occurring in Philadelphia and taking place during the week of November 11-15, 2015, to coincide with the Philadelphia Museum of Art Contemporary Craft Show.
Fourteen American Craft Council Fellows from Philadelphia, who have had an enduring national impact through their works in wood, clay, fiber, metal and glass, will be featured in art venues around the city, including The Center for Art in Wood, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Art Alliance, and The Clay Studio.
"Art in Wood" at The Center for Art in Wood will show works of ACC Fellows working in wood and in wood combined with other materials. The Fellows include furniture makers Michael Hurwitz and the late George Nakashima, woodturner David Ellsworth, and jewelers Sharon Church and Bruce Metcalf. A reception for the opening of this exhibit will take place on Friday, October 30th, from 6-8pm at The Center for Art in Wood. This exhibit runs through January 16, 2016.
Concurrrent with "Art in Wood," The Center will display a selection of portrait photographs of studio craft artists and designers working in wood by Paul J. Smith, Director Emeritus of the Museum of Arts and Design.
A programming vision for the inaugural Craft NOW Philadelphia initiative, "Masters of Craft" will offer locally-focused art craft events where locals and visitors can explore Philadelphia's innovations in the world of the handmade.
The Philadelphia Museum of Craft Show takes place November 12-15, 2015, at The Philadelphia Convention Center. Preview party is November 11. Tickets required.
The following special events have been planned to occur during the week:
"Old City Craft Night: Presented in partnership with the Old City District" takes place on Thursday, November 12, 5-8pm. An opportunity to see, shop, drink, and dine.
"Spanning Generations: A Conversation", a Craft NOW panel discussion between ACC Fellows and emerging talent, takes place on Friday, November 13, 3-5pm at The University of the Arts. Moderated by Judith Schaechter and Bruce Metcalf, it will feature Sharon Church, Meghan Ayers, Paula Winokur, Greg Moore, Robert Winokur, Nicholas Kripal, Warren Selig and Chrissy Day. Following the discussion, a Post-Panel Reception will take place at The Philadelphia Art Alliance from 6-8pm. Registration required.
CraftNOWCreate, takes place on Saturday, November 14, from 11am to 4pm, and features a demonstration by wood turner Derek Weidman and a make-and-take by artists/educators Beth Ireland and Suzanne Kahn. This event will be held at The Kimmel Center.
The Center for Art in Wood's Annual Founders Fundraising Event takes place on Saturday, November 14, 6-8pm. Ticket purchase required.
