Michael Mode Winner of Excellence in Wood Award at ACE 2017
CWA is pleased to announce that Michael Mode was chosen as the 2017 recipient of the Excellence in Wood Award at the American Craft Exposition on September 14th in Glencoe, Illinois. The CWA-sponsored award seeks to recognize and promote artists who are at the top of the field.
Mode is well known for creating laminated bowls using combinations of interesting woods, especially burls and exotic woods displaying exquisite grain pattern and figure. The results are objects that contain graceful geometric patterns with intricate symmetry and flow. His vessel forms, either open or lidded, are often inspired by the art and architecture of Mughal India.
Mode was chosen from a highly competitive field of artists. Judges commented that Mode’s work displayed excellent, precise craftsmanship; a deep knowledge of materials; beautifully chosen wood combinations; perfect finishing; and a consistent body of work at the highest level.
CWA thanks judges Al Miotke, Jeff Bernstein, and Judy Chernoff for their time and thorough deliberations in choosing the award recipient. Congratulations to Michael Mode for being recognized with this award, which carries with it a monetary prize.
