"Pots": 1990-present
Of the many series I have explored since the mid-1970s, the 'pot' series began as a simple shift away from the wondrous natural-edged burls and exotic materials I had used through the late '80's. The focus here is on pure forms and made with a direct design approach that explores the energy of engagement rather than any specific idea. It is through these forms that I developed the phrase, "Line as volume, rather than line as shape," for they challenge the viewer to experience the material of wood almost as a membrane that defines the volume of space within.
Idea...Concept...History...Instinct...Influence...Material...Process
Define the form: height, width and depth. Sense the inner volume begin to grow, begin to speak...listen
This veil of wood - this skin - to see, to touch, to hear; the inside of 'self' revealed, outside from within
Now...add pulse
