Artist Statement

A finely crafted piece of wood art excites the imagination when first viewed then entices and lures the viewer to partake of its charm by touching and feeling its beauty.

Wood is a very interesting medium to work with. I use the grain, color and figure of the wood to interact with the shape of the piece and finishing techniques to make interesting visual and tactile effects. The surface texture may be manipulated by chiseling, gouging, carving, scraping, scorching or leaving it just as it came from the shaping. Processes such as sanding or rasping have one sort of effect, while others leave the surface with a distinctively clear and natural appearance. Some finishing processes may enhance the figure of the grain while others are designed to hide the fact that the item is made from wood.
