Between The Worlds

Jim Kelso

2010    Size   H: 8.3 cm  W: 17.2 cm  D: 2.5 cm

In a museum

A small kenbyo (table screen) of personal viewing size with subject of a running hare. The hare, running with free abandon, symbolizes moving ahead. He glances behind, aware of where he came from, but his progress is ever forward, hence the title of “Between The Worlds”. The ebony was chosen for its beautiful grain pattern suggesting a painted, moonlit landscape. A few carved grasses were added to reinforce the landscape theme and to add a breezy movement. I left the live edge along the top of the wood to enhance the wild connection, as a reminder of its forest source. This piece of wood, like the hare, has both elements of gentle beauty and wildness.
