Platonic Ocean

Michael Foster

2016    Size   H: 6 in  W: 6 in  D: 6 in

Available for Purchase

My latest completed math turning. This piece is a turned Platonic solid, a dodecahedron. A dodecahedron has 12 pentagonal faces, 20 vertices and 30 edges. The form was totally accomplished on the lathe with many axes of turning to complete the internal spherical hollow and a matching external sphere. The external sphere was then turned on 6 axes with 12 fixings to form 12 dished out pentagons. The pentagonal faces reminded me of the symmetry of starfish so I decided to carve a different starfish on each face. The interior is 23k gold leaf. 6” x 6” x 6” Basswood, Rare Earth magnets, Acrylic, Ink and gold leaf
