This piece was originally intended as a Moibius type loop, but on designing it, there was much more to the math behind the form. The edge traces out a knot known as a torus knot (the piece started life on the lathe as a torus). The cross section is a form known in math as a hypocycloid (think spirograph) and the surfaces approach a minimal surface. Elder burl and Bush oil Stand is carved birch and india ink.
