The European buckthorn tree that this ladle came from was growing in our yard. The tree came out of the ground at approximately the ninety degree curve that connects the bowl with the handle and the handle generally follows the shape of the tree's stem. The front of the handle is the natural surface directly under the bark but all other surfaces have been worked. The sapwood had stained to a purplish hue and heartwood has darkened to a dramatic deep orange.
