This was a collaborative piece with noted woodworker A. Beaver supplying the wood and doing some of the detail carving. I had previously carved a smaller (11") spoon from a piece of aspen wood that had been chewed at both ends by beavers. My photographer friend Rudy Hellman had seen that spoon and thought of it when he discovered the piece of alder that would be used for this spoon. He wanted the spoon to be an obvious collaboration emphasizing the transition from the beaver's handiwork (toothwork?) at one end to my typical carving at the other.
