My arborist neighbor felled a very large red oak. The inside of the tree was hollow but an elongated burl-like growth had formed on the interior surface of the tree's shell. I do not understand the origins of this wood nor did a tree pathologist to whom I sent images. The extremely highly-figured, atypically very dark wood used for this piece was from that growth. On most of my work, I try to eliminate surface undulations caused by the changes in grain direction that produce figured wood, but on this piece the intensity and periodicity of those changes made that impossible.
