In a private collection
Photographer Rudy Hellmann, on an outdoor assignment, noticed a broken black walnut branch containing three holes made by woodpeckers. After retrieving it from a man who subsequently scavenged the area for firewood Rudy asked me to transform it into a spoon. We studied the very rough chunk and discussed the possibilities until I finally said, "Look, this piece of wood isn't going to change, and I'm not going to get any smarter, so if you're willing to stay here I'm willing to start right now." After an hour of band saw carving and rough hollowing, the basic configuration was set and Rudy left it with me for further refinement and final finishing. He intends to display it as a wall piece.
