A nearby village has a program of removing some of the large sugar and red maple trees that line its streets. These trees often exhibit attractive figure and, over the years, I've obtained some very good wood from them. This scoop came from the wedge that was cut as the initial step in felling such a tree. The thickness of the wedge at the exterior of the tree was just sufficient to use for the length of this scoop, and the top of the scoop is the surface of the wood that was right under the bark.
