This is a relatively large gallery piece, a lidded hollowform on a base with hornets routercarved on the front and back panels to match the handcarved hornet finial. It’s made from maple, cherry and a carved basswood finial. Parts have a transparent acrylic wash for contrast. It’s intended for 360 degree viewing and the panels of the base are canted out 7 degrees from bottom to top to change the “negative space” the viewer sees in going around it. They’re “Samurai” hornets because I’d recently seen the traveling Samurai museum exhibit, and the hornets’ overlapping scales and colors reminded me of the armor.
