Shell Fragment Series #8
2011 Size H: 7.25 in W: 5 in D: 3 in
In a private collection
Recycled maple, turned, cut, carved, pierced, bleached/dyed. Base is recycled maple, cut, carved, dye, brass rods. I was very honored when David Ellsworth, along with Arthur and Jane Mason, selected it for the Instant Gallery Critique at the St. Paul AAW Symposium in 2011. This piece is inspired by an ancient type of oyster shell that I find while beachcombing at Matanzas Inlet, south of St. Augustine, Fl. I often find shells that are either bleached by the sun, or colored by the chemical makeup of where they spend most of their time on the sea floor, and I wanted to show both as a juxtaposition. They are also interactive, as I have left them slightly loose on the brass rods, so that the viewer can rotate them in relation to each other.
