Everyone who sees M.C.Escher's etching "Relativity" is immediately fascinated with its stairways leading impossibly in three directions and with the realization that there is not a single "up" in the picture. After years of of contemplating the image, it occurred to me that it was actually realizable in three dimensions. The result of hundreds of dizzying hours of drawing and constructing, this piece stays very close to the architecture of the etching, and like the etching has three possible directions that are "up". For that reason the piece sits on one of its spines so that no one of those directions is favored, and so that one can look into the piece and get a view similar to that in the two-dimensional image. This piece is actually a box with six drawers, all in the outer walls of the structure. As there is no single orientation for the box, its functionality is not the issue. The woods are pommele sapele on the outer faces and figured cherry on the inner faces.
This close-up of the box approximates the view in Escher's etching.
