I saw a newpaper article about a mentally handicapped young man who had learned to ride a bicycle—contrary to the predictions of many caring specialists. His mother, like many parents of mentally challenged children, believed that her son deserves as full a life as possible, and insisted that he have special training to achieve what he wanted. I wanted to capture the joy and triumph this young man felt on his first solo ride, while still preserving his dignity as a person. Sculpted from maple, vera, and yellow pine, on a base veneered with buckeye burl. Finished with aniline dyes, acrylic polyurethane, and enamel.
I chose the proportions associated with Down's Syndrome to illustrate his handicap.
A special handle under the seat allows the trainer to help the rider stay upright.
