Ban-Shou - Tea at Sunset
2013 Size H: 13 in W: 8.75 in D: 6 in Weight: 1.13 lb
In a private collection
This piece was inspired by the time of evening when the sun has just kissed the horizon and appears to be a slightly squashed, fiery ball. Clouds above it are splashed with gold. The kettle itself is of maple. 23k gold leaf and my own formula of lacquer finish have been used to create the surface. The chawan (teacups) are of maple and finished in the same manner as the kettle. The tray is of sapele. The mon, or signature, displayed in red on gold leaf, reads Shiranami, White Wave, the name of the sailboat my dad had built in Japan when I was a boy and on which many wonderful cruises were made in the Inland Sea. This piece was published on numerous occasions, exhibited at SOFA in 2013, and was featured in the Balvenie Rare Craft Tour 2014.
