Kingwood Spoon with Spout
1993 Size H: 3 in W: 2 in D: 9 in
In a museum - Permanent Collction: The Yale Art Gallery
Donated by: The Family of Dr. Irving Lipton
Dr. Lipton called when he saw work of mine in British turning magazine. Later he requested slides of additional work and from those slides purchased this piece. In 1990 I saw a Roman oil lamp filler in an auction catalog. While I changed the design that catalog photo was the inspiration for several versions of this idea. At home we call this a "boat piece" because it reminds us of a gravy boat. In Kingwood the heartwood/sapwood transition area is variable, less clearly defined than it is in many woods. This contributes wonderfully to the character of whatever is carved from it.
